Today at approx. 13:00 UT the active region 1476 flexed its solar-flare-muscle and produced a beautiful M1.4-class solar flare.
M-class flares are of Medium size but can cause brief radio blackouts on Earth. Sometimes a minor radiation storm follows this solar flare category.
Since this active region is getting into a perfect location to cause space weather impact on Earth, we are certainly keeping our eyes on this sunspot group!

A Giant Sun Spot discovered by NASA, named AR1476, is expected to Produce Massive Solar Flares.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — An enormous sun spot is producing solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CME) that could soon be headed towards Earth.
According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, NOAA Region 1476, now poised just to the east of center on the solar disk, produced an impulsive R1(Minor) Radio Blackout at 1232 UTC (8:32 EDT) today.
The region is quite prominent, although just one-third in area of the large regions of the Halloween Storms in 2003, and exhibits a slight degree of magnetic complexity.
The giant sunspot will be in direct alignment with earth in the next few days, so Coronal Mass Ejections then would be likely to spawn geomagnetic activity here on Earth.
Just last month, an enormous solar prominence producing a solar flare and coronal mass ejection shot off the east limb (left side) of the sun on April 16, 2012. Such eruptions are often associated with solar flares, and in this case an M1 class (medium-sized) flare occurred at the same time, peaking at 1:45 PM EDT. The Coronal Mass Ejection last month was not aimed toward Earth.
NASA explains that a solar prominence (also known as a filament when viewed against the solar disk) is a large, bright feature extending outward from the Sun’s surface. Prominences are anchored to the Sun’s surface in the photosphere, and extend outwards into the Sun’s hot outer atmosphere, called the corona. A prominence forms over timescales of about a day, and stable prominences may persist in the corona for several months, looping hundreds of thousands of miles into space. Scientists are still researching how and why prominences are formed.

Stephen Hawking believes that one of the major factors in the possible scarcity of intelligent life in our galaxy is the high probability of an asteroid or comet colliding with inhabited planets. Through Earth’s history such collisions occur, on the average every one million years. If this figure is correct, it would mean that intelligent life on Earth has developed only because of the lucky chance that there have been no major collisions in the last 70 million years. Other planets in the galaxy, Hawking believes, on which life has developed, may not have had a long enough collision free period to evolve intelligent beings.
We have observed, Hawking points out in Life in the Universe, the collision of a comet, Schumacher-Levi, with Jupiter, which produced a series of enormous fireballs, plumes many thousands of kilometers high, hot “bubbles” of gas in the atmosphere, and large dark “scars” on the atmosphere which had lifetimes on the order of weeks.
It is thought the collision of a rather smaller body with the Earth, about 70 million years ago, was responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs. A few small early mammals survived, but anything as large as a human, would have almost certainly been wiped out.
“The threat of the Earth being hit by an asteroid is increasingly being accepted as the single greatest natural disaster hazard faced by humanity,” according to Nick Bailey of the University of Southampton’s School of Engineering Sciences team, who has developed a threat identifying program.

The Conservatives want a British version of the F’ing Bunch of Incompetents. No king-in drug lord has been put in prison, and we’re supposed to believe that it will start happening. No crooked expenses fiddling politician currently in parliament is in prison, and we’re expected to believe that will chance.
The new agency will PROTECT criminals, turn little people into criminals.
