US is building a missile defense radar station at a secret site in Qatar, and organizing its biggest-ever minesweeping exercises in the Persian Gulf, Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying on Tuesday.
The report said that construction was due to be completed this month. The radar site is part of a system designed to defend US interests and allies against Iran’s ballistic missiles, it said.
The minesweeping exercises, in September, will be the first such multilateral drills in the region, and are expected to be announced by U.S. officials.
The base in Qatar is slated to house an AN/TPY-2 radar, supplementing two similar arrays already in place in the Negev Desert and in central Turkey, the Journal said.
Together, the three radar sites form an arc that US officials say can detect missile launches from northern, western and southern Iran.
The paper also said the Pentagon chose to place the new radar site in Qatar because it is home to the largest US military air base in the region, Al Udeid Air Base.

A Zionist lawmaker tore up a copy of the New Testament to protest against the dissemination of the “despicable book,” which was sent to members of parliament by a Christian organisation.
The MP Michael Ben Ari of the ultra-nationalist National Union opposition party was one of the Knesset members who received by mail on Monday a copy of the “Book of Testaments.”
It contains the Jewish Bible, known to Christians as the Old Testament, and the New Testament, the Gospels and epistles of the Christian faith written after the time of Jesus.
A letter sent with the book from the “Bible Society in Israel” director Victor Kalisher said the new edition “sheds light on the holy scriptures and helps understand them. In addition, the references show the close correlation” between the two.
A picture published on the Zionist news website NRG-Maariv taken by Ben Ari’s aide shows the lawmaker tearing up the book.
“This despicable book galvanized the murder of millions of Jews during the Inquisition and during auto da fe instances,” he was quoted as saying in reference to the New Testament.
“This is an ugly missionary provocation by the church; this book and its senders should be in history’s trash can,” Ben Ari said on NRG-Maariv.
A parliamentary spokesman said that since it was a book and not dangerous materials that was sent, there was no reason to get involved in the lawmakers’ mail.
Kalisher was not immediately available for comment on Tuesday.
However, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was horrified by reports that a member of the Zionist parliament tore up a copy of the New Testament and posed for photographs with the destroyed bible.
ADL called on Knesset Member Michael Ben Ari to publicly apologize for tearing up a copy of the New Testament he had received after a publisher sent copies to all members of the Zionist Knesset.

Unexplained triangular lights seen in Staffordshire have featured in a raft of UFO documents released to the public today by The National Archives.
The 25 files, which contain more than 6,700 pages, include details of strange lights and unidentified objects seen by a number of local residents in 1988.

The incidents were reported to local MP William Cash, who passed on the information to the House of Commons.
This is the ninth collection of UFO files to arrive at The National Archives in Kew. Released today, the files include realms of information about potential UFO sightings, many of which were reported by credible observers such as military pilots, air traffic controllers and police officers.
The files also include a lengthy briefing on UFO policy to Prime Minister Tony Blair’s office at the time the Government had just begun the implementation of the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act, as well as behind-the-scenes information about the MoD’s decision to open the UFO files following an FoI campaign by Dr David Clarke of Sheffield Hallam University.
And according to a UFO desk officer, whose thoughts are included in the files, aliens could be visiting Earth as tourists.
The officer, whose role is described as the closest thing to a ‘UFO expert’, details possible explanations for UFO ‘sightings’, including mass hallucinations, hoaxes, military reconnaissance and tourism.
“So they would be coming here as we would go to another country or a national park, they are coming across the universe to visit us,” said Dr Clarke, explaining the officer’s comments.

As a major city, Norwich is used to friendly invasions of tourists eager to see its historic sights and sample its culture.
However, it appears the city has a set of very well travelled admirers – who instead of travelling by car, train and coach take a more exotic form of transport to Norwich – flying saucers.
According to top secret UFO reports released to the public today, a UFO was seen hovering over St Saviour’s Church in Magdalen Street by a woman from the Lakenham area, who claimed she had a series of very close encounters with galactic beings.
And also in the 6,700 pages of UFO reports released by the National Archives are documents relating to other UFO sightings linked to Norfolk and Suffolk – a scare at RAF Lakenheath, suspected aliens hovering over the Broads and Great Yarmouth and service personnel from RAF Marham spotting bright white lights in the sky.
But the most startling report is of the St Saviour’s Church sighting which includes a photograph of a spherical object over the building.
The photograph was taken by a woman, whose personal details are blanked out in the report, who also took a picture of an object over her flat.
And in her email to the Ministry of Defence in May 2006, the woman says she had been in contact with the strange craft’s occupants, which she calls greys, since when she was a child.
Her email says: “It is a fallacy for the government to assume that these vehicles aren’t piloted by intelligences. I sensed the craft was like a living organism, but intelligences were inside it (biomechanical.)

The Hawaii Attorney General’s Office issued a statement Tuesday afternoon (July 17) in response to charges from Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio that he says casts doubt on the authenticity of Barack Obama’s birth certificate.
As detailed in news reports, including this one from a Phoenix TV station, Arpaio says he has uncovered evidence that the certificate is a forgery. The sheriff also criticized Hawaii Health Department regulations for obtaining copies of the certificate as “lax.”
Joshua Wisch, special assistant to the Hawaii AG, issued a detailed response.
Excerpts:
The State of Hawaii has repeatedly confirmed the indisputable evidence of President Obama’s birth in Hawaii. …
President Obama was born in Honolulu, and his birth certificate is valid. …
Regarding the latest allegations from a sheriff in Arizona, they are untrue, misinformed, and misconstrue Hawaii law. …
Not only are Hawaii’s vital records some of the best managed, but they also have some of the strongest restrictions on access to prevent identity theft and fraud.
The New Zealand judge due to hear the extradition case of Kim Dotcom, the Megaupload founder accused of masterminding a huge copyright infringement conspiracy, has stepped down after he referred to the US as the “enemy”.
Auckland district court judge David Harvey made the comment, which was recorded and posted on the internet, at a conference in Auckland last week. During a discussion about New Zealand’s copyright laws and how they could be affected by trade talks with the US, Mr Harvey, a specialist in internet law, told the audience: “We have met the enemy and he is [the] US”
Jan-Marie Doogue, the district court’s chief judge, said Mr Harvey had offered to step down.
“He recognises that remarks made in the context of a paper he delivered on copyright law at a recent internet conference could reflect on his impartiality and that the appropriate response is for him to step down from the case,” he said.
The US Department of Justice is seeking to extradite Mr Dotcom, the 38-year-old founder of file sharing website Megaupload, and several colleagues from New Zealand to face charges of copyright infringement, racketeering and money laundering. The last two charges carry maximum penalties of 20 years in prison.
The DoJ has accused Mr Dotcom and his associates of making more than $175m in illegal profits from a worldwide internet piracy enterprise that has cost copyright owners more than $500m.
