Doctors are considering vaccinating newborn babies against whooping cough amid the worst outbreak of the disease in almost two decades.
So far this year there have been more than 3,500 cases of the disease, which can be fatal, in England and Wales – three times higher than in the whole of last year, when the current outbreak began.
The cases this year include six deaths, all in babies aged under three months.
Babies are currently given the whooping cough vaccine as part of the five-in-one jab at eight weeks, 12 weeks and at 16 weeks of age with a booster given before starting school.
However government advisers are now considering if newborns should be vaccinated, if the jab should be offered to pregnant women to protect their child from birth, and if close family members of babies should be vaccinated (that means you) in a strategy known as “cocooning”.
The Department of Health’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is also looking at whether to offer boosters for teenagers.
